To guarantee sanitary and behavioural quality for the animals in the aquarium, Mare Nostrum has a quarantine and reserves zone of 80 m3, which is inaccessible to visitors.
This section of the aquarium is used in various situations:
- To acclimatise the animals and sometimes for their convalescence should they be injured, prior to their transfer to the exhibition aquariums.
- For visits from the vet who works with Mare Nostrum, who may be caused to prescribe a dosage and an application protocol of pharmaceutical substances in cases where sick animals are being treated.
- For breeding, i.e. reproduction (jellyfish, tropical fish) and the development of animals through to a level of growth that enables them to cohabit with the other species in the aquarium.
