Water processing

A water processing system at the cutting edge of progress for captive animals in good health!

The Mare Nostrum aquarium has been designed to operate with natural sea water; first collected from a pumping network that has proved its worth in terms of quality and fish breeding, then routed by tanker truck, it is currently (first year of operation) renewed in the amount of 5% every week.

In order to provide the very best living conditions for the animals kept, water treatment at the Mare Nostrum aquarium is the object of a great deal of technical and human effort.
Since the clarity and stability of the aquatic environment is one of the keys to the good health of the animals, Mare Nostrum has its own laboratory equipped with all the equipment required for daily monitoring of the physico-chemical and bacteriological parameters of the water:

  • 5 separate circuits of sea water (and one circuit of fresh water), thermo-regulated according to the requirements of the various species.
  • 1 sterilisation by ultraviolet radiation to restrict the development of certain pathogenic agents.
  • 1 ozone processing to reduce by a maximum the level of organic materials.
  • Denitrators to remove pollution from the water in the aquariums in the exhibition.
